Wet petfood reformulation
Laura Gil Martens, Chief Nutritionist, R&D Manager, AM Nutrition
Pea protein concentrate can be used in Wet Petfood both for protein extension purposes and as a functional ingredient due to its positive binding properties
Extensive series of factory trials carried out during Q4 2022 based on commercial recipes for Chunk-in-Jelly and Chunk-in-Gravy give confidence on that AMN PPC can successfully replace Sprayed Dried Animal Plasma (SDAP).
The Dog and Cat food recipes contained between 0.5 and 1.25% inclusion SDAP. The experimental groups consisted of blood plasma substitution at 0% (control) and replacement at 10%, 25%, and 50%.
Sensorial and textural product evaluation was done after 24 hours production and after 8-weeks storage. Results indicated that up to 50% SDAP replacement with AMN PPC presented no operational challenges for the production plant and conferred indeed an excellent product quality and palatability. These factory trials confirm previous a pilot plant evaluation.
In conclusion, AMN PPC was demonstrated to successfully replace SDAP in heat-set chunk products offering opportunities for savings in recipe cost and as a sustainable alternative to animal protein.
