AMN Pea concentrates as functional ingredients in petfood snacks

Petfood snacks represent, nowadays, the fastest growing segment of the pet food industry, and nearly every Petfood brand include functional snacks in their product portfolio. However, despite the popularity of such products, little is known about the nutritional value of the products, and the existing opportunities for reformulation for the improvement of product quality.

The latest EU regulation states that dog snacks should be labelled as ‘complementary feed’, which is legally defined as ‘compound feed which has a high content of certain substances but which, by reason of its composition, is sufficient for a daily ration only if used in combination with other diet. The EU law also establishes rules and requirements for labelling to provide adequate information for consumers.

The fact is that today there is a broad range of available process technologies for production of Petfood snacks (Figure 1), as well as an endless variety of formulations and a fast-growing demand of functional snacks. The main goal of functional snacks is to provide any extra benefit to the snack, whether nutritionally, or by supporting certain health conditions, while tasting great and provide a certain level of enjoyment for the pet.

AM Nutrition (AMN) Pea concentrates: Pea protein, Pea starch and Pea hull fiber are air-classified ingredients widely recognized in Petfood formulation by their high nutritional value and excellent functionality.

AMN Pea Concentrates are clean label ingredients with low environmental impact and are currently implemented in the manufacturing of dry and wet Petfood, as well as in semi-moist and snacks formulations.

Especially addressing the Petfood snack segment, we do foresee the use of AMN Pea concentrates in the manufacturing of biscuits, meat-based stripes, chewable and dental sticks

Our value proposition is the following:

  • AMN Pea Protein Concentrate (PPC), as vegetable protein source in high protein snacks and protein extension in hybrid snacks.
  • AMN Pea Starch Concentrate native (PSC) and pre-gelatinized (Carrymoist®) as bio-active compound in binding systems, in partial or total replacement of potato, tapioca, rice, wheat and corn starches, replacement of glycerine (Carrymoist®).
  • AMN Pea hull fiber (PHF), as functional ingredient and source of dietary fiber and as texturization agent.
